Probably either:
- an alteration of morel with Italian -ello substituted for the ending, perhaps after Italian morello (“dark-coloured”);[1] or
- from Italian amarello and/or Dutch amarelle, marelle, both from Medieval Latin amārellum, from Latin amārus + -ellum.[2]
