This is an indeterminately reserved code, included as part of ISO 3166-1 on the request of the Secretary-General of the United Nations due to its use in designating road vehicles under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, and is not endorsed for general use by the ISO. 1. (Islam) Initialism of Arabic رَضِيَ ٱللهُ عَنْهُ (raḍiya llāhu ʕanhu, “may God be pleased with him”): a suffixal honorific used to honour companions of Muhammad (and by extension, the pious deceased in some usage).

   Abu Bakr (RA), a companion of Muhammad (PBUH).

2. (Islam) Initialism of Arabic رَحْمَةُ ٱللهِ عَلَيْهِ (raḥmatu llāhi ʕalayhi, “may God have mercy on him”): a suffixal honorific used to honour the deceased.

   Muhammad Ali Jinnah (RA) is known as the Father of Pakistan.

• In practice, RA is usually taken to mean رَضِيَ ٱللهُ عَنْهُ (raḍiya llāhu ʕanhu, “may God be pleased with him”) unless context makes رَحْمَةُ ٱللهِ عَلَيْهِ (raḥmatu llāhi ʕalayhi, “may God have mercy on him”) clear. The latter sense is common in some South Asian English writing but remains ambiguous for many readers.
