    Etymology 2

    Borrowed from German Low German Pik. Found specifically in the expression einen Pik auf jemanden haben (to bear a grudge against someone), a calque of German Low German enen Pik up jemand hebben, in turn borrowed from French être en pique avec quelqu’un, from the verb piquer (to irritate); compare English pique. This phrase is no longer in use in German; the adjective pikiert is better-known. Cognate to Dutch [[:pik#Dutch|to bear a grudge against someone]].
