From Proto-Finnic *vaino, borrowed from Old East Slavic воина (voina, “war”). Compare Russian война (vojna, “war”). Cognate with Finnish vaino. Alternatively of Baltic origin; compare Latvian vaina (“fault, guilt”). The word appears in older literature often with the meaning of "war".
