torppa

1. (historical) croft, copyhold (farm, part of a larger farm or manor, the rent of which was paid through work on the owner's land and sometimes with produce, extant in Sweden and Finland from the 17th to the early 20th century)
2. a house on a croft or copyhold; cottage (small farmhouse)

• The land ownership system in England differed from that of Sweden and Finland and thus torppa and “copyhold” are not exactly equivalent forms of land tenure.
• If the lessee rented the whole farm, the property was called lampuotitila and the lessee was lampuoti.
• The difference between torppa and mäkitupa is that the former included arable land, sufficient to feed those living as part of the croft or copyhold, while the latter included only (very) little, if any at all.
