tallassi (Lontara spelling ᨈᨒᨔᨗ)

  1. (transitive) to let live; to bring to life; to keep alive
    Tallassiaʼ karaeng
    Let me live, lord.
    Nipapoleangi sanggenna maka natallassinna rukuʼ
    It is paid for until the grass can keep the animal alive again (legal text: until it can graze again).
  2. (transitive, euphemistic) to extinguish; to put out (e.g., a fire or lamp, referring to "killing" the fire in a polite/auspicious way)
    Teako tallassi lampua
    Do not extinguish the lamp.
    Punna leʼbakko appallu, tallassi pepeʼnu
    When you are done cooking, extinguish your fire.
