From Middle Low German (ge)schutte, from Proto-Germanic *gaskutją. Cognate with German Geschütz (gun), Dutch geschut (artillery). A collective from the noun *skutiz (shot), which is a verbal noun from *skeutaną. The modern Danish form is influenced by the Standard German cognate.
