Inherited from Proto-Bantu *-pɪ́tɪda (“Applicative of *-pɪ́ta (“to go”)”). By surface analysis, -pita (“to go”) + -ira (“applicative suffix for verbs where the penultimate vowel of the stem is [i], [u] or [a]”). Cognate with Swahili pitia.
