Inherited from Proto-Bantu *-pɪ́tɪda (Applicative of *-pɪ́ta (to go)). By surface analysis, -pita (to go) +‎ -ira (applicative suffix for verbs where the penultimate vowel of the stem is [i], [u] or [a]). Cognate with Swahili pitia.
