1. From o-grade stem of Proto-Indo-European *gʷelbʰ- (“womb”) (whence Ancient Greek δελφύς (delphús) and Sanskrit गर्भ (garbha)), provided the acute developed later on;
2. Related to galėti, from Proto-Indo-European *gelH- (“able”);
3. Standing in connection to synonymous šelpti, pointing at a possible phonetic alternation š- / k- with additional voicing.
