Etymology

Smoczyński[1] describes the etymology as unknown, but presents the possibilities:

  1. From o-grade stem of Proto-Indo-European *gʷelbʰ- (womb) (whence Ancient Greek δελφύς (delphús) and Sanskrit गर्भ (garbha)), provided the acute developed later on;
  2. Related to galėti, from Proto-Indo-European *gelH- (able);
  3. Standing in connection to synonymous šelpti, pointing at a possible phonetic alternation š- / k- with additional voicing.
