    Inherited from Middle French froit, from Old French froit, freid, inherited from Latin frīgidus (“cold”) (through a syncopated Vulgar Latin or Late Latin form frigdus, fricdus, attested in the Appendix Probi, or fridus, on a Pompeian inscription). Doublet of frigide, a later borrowing.
