Inherited from Old English fēowertēoþa, from Proto-West Germanic *feurþō tehundō, itself from Proto-Germanic *fedurþô tehundô; by surface analysis, four (“four”) +‎ tithe (“tenth, tithe”).

The form fowrtuðe in the AB language; the development of either fēowertēoþa or of a *fēowerteogoþa (formed equivalently to teogoþa, alternative form of tēoþa (“tenth”) and attested as inflected fēowerteogeðan) in unstressed position.
