electrodiesel (plural electrodiesels)

  1. (rail transport) A locomotive that can be powered either from an electricity supply or by using the onboard diesel engine.
    • 1959 November, “Notes and News: Locomotive Notes”, in Railway Magazine, page 805:
      Six of the locomotives will be of the "electro-diesel" type, which is entirely new to Britain. They will be built at Doncaster Works for the Southern Region. These electro-diesel locomotives are designed to operate as diesel-electric locomotives on non-electrified sidings and main lines, using electric power supplied by a 600-h.p. diesel engine-driven generator, or as electric locomotives when on electrified lines.
