Uncertain. At least two proposals exist:

1. Borrowed from Spanish asno or Latin asinus, phonetically improbable.
2. From hartz (“bear”) +‎ -to (diminutive suffix), phonetically impeccable, but semantically strange.

If the second theory is correct, then it may be related to the element Asto, which appears in an Aquitanian theonym found in Latin texts, Asto Ilunno.^[1][2]
