angle iron

angle iron (plural angle irons)

2. (idiomatic) A length of iron or steel (now usually steel), having an L-shaped cross section, used as a structural component, support, or mending brace.
   • 1938, Xavier Herbert, chapter VII, in Capricornia‎^[1], page 92:

     The homestead […] was of corrugated iron on an angle-iron frame.

Although the sense of angle iron in reference to steel angle stock is a misnomer (comparable to tin foil in reference to aluminum foil), it is well known and still commonly used.
