    The etymon is uncertain. Probably derived from Old Occitan aize, because of the palatalization. Ultimately cognate with Galician azo, Italian agio, Portuguese azo, English ease, French aise. The semantic development moved from "a place where to stay at ease", then passing through "restroom" and, antiphrastically, "a dirty place", to nowadays meanings.
