From Proto-East Cushitic *waaḳ- (“sky god”). Cognate with Somali Waaq, Rendille Waakh.

Folk Etymology derives this name from waan (“thing”) +‎ haqa (“true, justice”), literally “one true thing”, in Gada system or Wakeffata religion.
