    From Latin Tergeste, probably of Venetic origin, and derived from the hypothetical Illyrian *terg.[1][2] The first element, terg may have meant "market" (thus cognate to Albanian treg, Proto-Slavic *tъrgъ, Old Norse torg), and the second element, -est, may have meant "place".
